Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Specialist (HIIPS) Course Description:
Heat-related hazards can lead to heat-related incidents and are often overlooked in the workplace. Did you know that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cites heat as “the leading cause of death among all hazardous weather conditions in the United States?” Because of that, assessments must be conducted to identify heat hazards to which workers are exposed.
This course will help you implement a Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Program (HIIPP) in your workforce. You will learn how to recognize heat-related illnesses, their causes and effects on the body, and heat abatement strategies. This course is designed as a ‘best practices program guide’ for workplaces that may be subject to potential jobsite heat inspections under OSHA’s General Duty Clause.
NASP’s goal for this course is to help you understand heat stress and heat-related illnesses, minimize risks on the job, and recognize signs and symptoms so that you can respond accordingly when they occur.
Upon completion of the Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Specialist (HIIPS) course, the student will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:
- Outline OSHA's Proposed Ruling for a national standard for preventing heat illness in outdoor and indoor work areas.
- Define and explain Heat Illness vs. Heat Injury.
- Recognize and identify heat-related illnesses, causes, and effects on the body.
- Apply heat abatement strategies for managing heat exposure and mitigating workplace heat stress risk.
- Plan, develop, and implement a comprehensive Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Program for your workplace.
- Conduct training on self-monitoring and establish communication measures for employees working in heat-affected environments.
- Manage, analyze, and document the success of your Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Program and implement continuous improvement plans.
