24-Hour HAZWOPER General Site Worker Course Description:

The 24-Hour HAZWOPER General Site Worker Course is designed for employees who are engaged in hazardous waste operations and who may be exposed to hazardous substances on contaminated sites, but who do not require the full 40-hour initial training. This course meets the requirements of OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard, 29 CFR 1910.120(e).

General site workers trained at this level are typically equipment operators, laborers, or other personnel who need the knowledge and skills to recognize hazards, protect themselves, and perform assigned duties under the direction of fully trained supervisors or managers.

Upon completion, participants will be prepared to work safely on hazardous waste sites as part of a site team, with a focus on hazard recognition, protective measures, and safe work practices.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:

  • Analyze hazardous situations using basic hazard and risk assessment techniques.
  • Determine appropriate response actions based on the results of hazard analysis.
  • Select and apply proper PPE for hazardous substance response.
  • Demonstrate correct use of advanced respiratory protection equipment.
  • Implement advanced techniques to stop or control hazardous substance releases.
  • Operate specialized tools, equipment, and materials to conduct leak control procedures.
  • Establish and manage effective decontamination operations.
  • Apply strategies to prevent secondary contamination during response activities.
  • Coordinate effectively with other response levels, including awareness, operations, specialists, and command staff.
  • Demonstrate safe disengagement from emergency operations.
  • Define and correctly use basic chemical and toxicological terminology relevant to emergency response.
  • Recognize potential health and safety hazards associated with hazardous materials.
