What is PHS?

In the world of workplace safety, Psychological Health and Safety (PHS) appears to be the hot buzzword. But what is PHS? Psychological health and safety deals with how we think, feel, and behave. While traditional health and safety practices are concerned with physical risks, psychological health and safety focuses on the mental health and well-being of workers.

Why Is PHS Important?

Psychological health and well-being have long been critical issues within organizational settings. Conditions such as stress, burnout, anxiety, and depression not only incur substantial financial costs but also lead to high rates of long-term sickness and absenteeism, resulting in significant disruptions to business operations. However, recent research has shown that psychosocial risks have a large impact beyond mental health. In recent years, we realized that psychological health issues are often the root cause or a contributing cause to many physical injuries in the workplace.

In this course, you will be introduced to the concept of PHS and how to plan and implement a PHS program based on ISO, NIOSH and other guidelines.

Upon completion of the Psychological Health & Safety Specialist (PHSS) course, the student will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:

  • Define the history of PHS and the significance of PHS risks in the workplace
  • Describe the interrelation between OSHA, NIOSH, ISO, and other international agencies as it applies to PHS hazards and risks
  • Understand the concepts of ‘Safety 1’ vs ‘Safety 2’ and distinguish between HOP and PHS
  • Define and teach principles of PHS, along with their risks and mitigation in the workplace
  • Determine proper evaluation methods of your workplace psychosocial hazards and risks using recognized scientific worker surveys
  • Design, measure, and implement continuous improvement plans in your PHS program
