Description:

This course provides an understanding of the principles of electricity and the electrical hazards common to business and industry. It examines the common electrical injuries to employees and how to prevent them. You will learn how to recognize, evaluate, and control electrical hazards. The course covers regulatory compliance and safe work practices. It includes a thorough review of NFPA 70E requirements. The required amount of time to complete the course is dependent upon your knowledge of workplace safety. You have up to six months to complete the course.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will attain the designation of Electrical Safety Specialist (ESS). With this certificate, the student will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and abilities to:

  • Identify common factors of electrical accidents.
  • Explain the hazards of electrical work and their effects on the employee.
  • Describe the main elements in an electrical safe work program.
  • Summarize the requirements for establishing an electrically safe work condition.
  • Establish the requirements for a shock risk and arc flash assessment.
  • Implement approach boundaries for shock protection and arc flash hazard for qualified and unqualified employees.
  • Select personal protective equipment for shock and arc flash protection.
  • Conduct safe work practices if an arc flash hazard is present.

Prerequisites:

The Electrical Safety Specialist (ESS) Course is a foundational course that requires no prerequisites.

Continuing Education Units:

(1.30) CEUs are offered for this course. As an IACET Accredited Provider, NASP offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard. CEUs will be reflected on the Certificate upon successful completion of the course and passing the exam. Partial credit or adjusted CEUs will not be awarded for individuals who do not successfully meet the criteria for achievement of CEUs.

Online Exams:

The student will take a comprehensive online exam at the end of the course. You must score 80% to receive a certificate. You have two opportunities to pass the exam.

Recertification:

A refresher course and exam will be required every three (3) years. The cost of this recertification is $150.
