8-HR HAZWOPER Refresher Course Description: This 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher course is designed to comply with the annual training requirements set forth by OSHA under 29 CFR 1910.120 for general site workers involved in hazardous waste operations and emergency response. Whether you are an equipment operator, site supervisor, environmental technician, or emergency responder, this training serves to maintain your proficiency in hazard recognition, regulatory compliance, and safety practices when working in hazardous environments.   Through dynamic case studies, participants explore real-world applications of site characterization, hazard mitigation, and coordinated response efforts. The training reinforces foundational knowledge and introduces updates related to chemical, biological, radiological, physical, and environmental hazards commonly encountered on hazardous waste sites.     Topics Covered: OSHA HAZWOPER Regulatory Overview (29 CFR 1910.120) Site Characterization and Hazard Assessment Medical Surveillance and Fitness for Duty Hazard Recognition (Chemical, Biological, Physical, Radiological) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Selection and Use Engineering and Administrative Controls Fire, Explosion, and Toxic Hazards GHS/HAZCOM Standards and Hazard Communication Environmental Case Study: Enbridge Line 6B Incident Emergency Response Planning and Coordination Refresher on Control Measures and Work Practices     Intended Audience: This course is intended for: General site workers at uncontrolled hazardous waste operations Environmental remediation personnel Supervisors and managers responsible for worker safety Emergency response workers involved in hazardous substance releases     Upon completion of the 8-HR HAZWOPER Refresher course, the student will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to: Identify key health and safety hazards associated with hazardous waste operations. Understand and apply OSHA’s HAZWOPER standards, including training levels and responsibilities. Interpret the requirements for medical surveillance, PPE, and control measures. Assess and characterize hazardous waste sites, including physical, chemical, and biological evaluations. Apply lessons learned from large-scale environmental incidents. Comprehend hazardous materials labeling systems, including GHS and HAZCOM. Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures, exposure limits, and decontamination methods.    Prerequisites: Completion of the initial 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER training as per OSHA regulations is required prior to enrolling in this refresher course.    Continuing Education Units: 0.8 CEUs are offered for this course. As an IACET Accredited Provider, NASP offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard. CEUs will be reflected on the Certificate upon successful completion of the course and passing the exam. Partial credit or adjusted CEUs will not be awarded to individuals who do not successfully meet the criteria for achievement of CEUs.     Online Exams: The student will take a comprehensive online exam at the end of the course. You must score 80% to receive a certificate of completion. You have two opportunities to pass the exam.     Recertification: A refresher course and exam will be required every year. Description: This course combines the elements of the General Site Worker Supervisor and Incident Commander Courses for those who oversee hazardous waste sites during an emergency response scenario. Emphasis is on Site Safety and Health Plan and Contingency Plan requirements. The required amount of time to complete the course is dependent upon your knowledge of workplace safety. You have up to six months to complete the course.   Upon successful completion of this course, the student will attain the designation of HAZWOPER Specialist (HZS). With this certificate, the student will have acquired the knowledge, skills and abilities to: Understand the background of HAZWOPER and affiliated regulations. Understand the concept of “cradle to grave.” Create a Health and Safety Plan in accordance with the HAZWOPER Standard. Conduct a site analysis and prepare a site control program. Apply other OSHA standard related to HAZWOPER. Implement a medical surveillance program for employees involved in HAZWOPER. Choose appropriate personal protective equipment based on the type of chemical exposure. Understand how to handle drums and containers safely. Apply decontamination procedures to an emergency response of hazardous materials.   Prerequisites: The HAZWOPER Specialist (HZS) Course is a foundational course that requires no prerequisites.   Continuing Education Units: (1.30) CEUs are offered for this course. As an IACET Accredited Provider, NASP offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard.
